My First Pickleball Tournament

by Natalie Ruiz

Stepping onto a pickleball court in your first tournament, the rush of excitement and the camaraderie of fellow players make it an exhilarating experience. When it comes to participating in your first pickleball tournament, the stakes feel higher, and the pressure is real. Over a year ago now, I took the plunge into my first tournament (at Montclair Pickleball), and what a journey it was!

I had been playing a lot recreationally, but the competitive environment seemed like a completely different game. Playing those at my level, and getting to see those playing at a higher level, It became evident that there was much more to learn.
Rather than feeling discouraged, I saw this as an opportunity for growth. I had seen signs for coaching and lessons in the lobby of the tennis center so I grabbed one! The tournament had shown me how much room there was for growth, and I realized the fastest way to that growth would be with more structured guidance of clinics and lessons.

To anyone gearing up for their first tournament, remember that it’s all part of the journey. Embrace the nerves, prioritize your health, and view every challenge as an opportunity to grow. Whether you win or lose, the experience will make you a better player and a more resilient competitor.

So here’s to the next tournament and the continuous adventure of becoming the best pickleball player we can be. See you on the court!
